Bringing Labour to the Forefront of EDI

UofC’s Graduate Labour Union (GLU) Vice-Chair International Karina Hincapie Martinez, joined a panel of graduate students this Monday at. The discussion—organized by the university’s Faculty of Graduate Studies—featured two other graduate students Jamie Anderson and Alex Paquette. 

While Karina was the only participant who centred her discussion around academic labour as an avenue for change, the theme was woven throughout the responses of every panelist.  A consistent takeaway from all three graduate students was that change requires solidarity.

The event An Open Conversation: Graduate students reflect on opportunities for change  to discuss opportunities for change at the University of Calgary in the realm of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Accessibility was part of the University of Calgary's EDIA week and attended by graduate students, leaders, and university administration.  The event focused on lived experiences of graduate students facing different challenges, as well as a diversity of approaches to overcoming them and improving the University of Calgary for those that come after them.
